How to Add or Switch Insurance Plans on Your Medximity Account

Quick Answer

Log in to your Medximity account, go to My Account > Insurance & Billing, and select Add Insurance or Edit next to your current plan. Changes save immediately and are sent to your provider's practice for review.

Before You Update Your Insurance

Have your insurance card ready before you start. Here's what you need to add insurance online:

  • Insurance carrier name
  • Member ID (also called Subscriber ID)
  • Group number (if applicable)
  • Policyholder name and date of birth (if you're covered under someone else's plan)
  • Plan effective date

You should update your insurance any time you start a new job, complete open enrollment, become eligible for Medicare, or experience a coverage change mid-treatment. If you have an upcoming chiropractic visit, update your information at least 24 hours before your appointment so the practice has time to verify your benefits.

How to Add a New Insurance Plan

Follow these steps to add new insurance to your existing patient account:

  1. Log in at medximity.com.
  2. Click your name in the top-right corner and select My Account.
  3. Choose Insurance & Billing from the left menu.
  4. Click Add Insurance.
  5. Start typing your carrier name in the search field and select it from the list.
  6. Enter your Member ID, Group Number, and policyholder details.
  7. Select whether this is your Primary or Secondary insurance.
  8. Click Save Insurance.

You'll see a green confirmation banner: "Insurance plan added successfully."

How to Switch or Replace Your Primary Insurance

Use these steps to replace your primary insurance on file:

  1. Go to My Account > Insurance & Billing.
  2. Find your current primary plan and click Edit.
  3. Update the carrier, Member ID, and any other changed fields — or click Remove Plan to delete it entirely.
  4. If you removed the old plan, click Add Insurance and enter your new plan details.
  5. Set the plan type to Primary.
  6. Click Save Insurance.

Common reasons to switch your primary plan include a new employer, open enrollment changes, or transitioning to Medicare. Patients in personal injury cases who move from a lien arrangement to a workers' compensation plan should also update their primary insurance at this step and notify their practice directly.

Adding a Secondary Insurance Plan

Yes — you can have two insurance plans on file at once. Many patients carry both a primary plan through their employer and a secondary plan through a spouse or supplemental policy.

  1. Go to My Account > Insurance & Billing.
  2. Confirm your primary plan is already saved.
  3. Click Add Insurance.
  4. Enter your secondary carrier details.
  5. Set the plan type to Secondary.
  6. Click Save Insurance.

In chiropractic billing, your primary insurance is billed first. If a balance remains after primary payment, the secondary plan may cover part or all of it. Your provider's practice handles the coordination — you don't need to submit to both plans yourself.

What Happens After You Save Your Changes

When you save, Medximity sends your updated insurance information to your provider's practice. Here's what to expect:

  • Confirmation message: A green banner confirms the save was successful.
  • Practice review: The practice typically verifies new coverage within 1 business day.
  • Verification delay: If your plan is new (recently activated), verification may take longer depending on your carrier's system.

If your insurance change is not showing on your account after saving, try logging out and back in. If the issue continues, contact Medximity support (see below).

If Your Insurance Plan Isn't Listed

If your insurance plan is not found in the search results, try these steps:

  1. Search by abbreviation or a shorter version of the carrier name (e.g., "BCBS" instead of "Blue Cross Blue Shield").
  2. Check your insurance card for the exact plan name — carrier names vary by region.
  3. If no results appear, select "My plan isn't listed" at the bottom of the search results.
  4. Enter your carrier name manually and provide your Member ID.
  5. Click Save Insurance. Your provider's practice will verify the plan directly with your carrier.

How Insurance Changes Affect Upcoming Appointments

You can change your insurance before your appointment — and in most cases, you should. Here's what to keep in mind:

  • Update your insurance at least 24 hours before a scheduled visit.
  • Same-day changes may not be verified in time. Call the practice directly to confirm they received the update.
  • If your new plan has not yet been verified, the practice may ask you to pay as a self-pay patient and apply the insurance payment retroactively once confirmed.
  • Patients mid-treatment who switch carriers should notify their provider as soon as possible. Some plans require a new referral or authorization before continuing care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to update my insurance before a chiropractic visit?

Yes. Updating your insurance before your visit helps the practice verify your benefits and prevents billing delays. Aim to update at least 24 hours in advance.

Can I have two insurance plans on file at once?

Yes. You can add both a primary and a secondary plan. Your provider's practice will bill them in the correct order.

What's the difference between primary and secondary insurance?

Your primary insurance is billed first. If it doesn't cover the full balance, your secondary insurance may cover the remainder. You can only have one plan designated as primary at a time.

My insurance change isn't showing after saving. What do I do?

Log out and log back in to refresh your account. If the update still isn't visible, contact Medximity support using the link below.

I'm in a personal injury case. Which insurance do I enter?

If you're being treated under a lien or workers' compensation arrangement, contact your provider's practice directly. They will advise you on how to record coverage for billing purposes.
